Consultation is a process where you can learn from an expert on a specific topic.
Let's say you have a loved one with BPD, and you want to learn more about the diagnosis and how to navigate your relationship with them.
A consult gives you the opportunity to meet with an expert, ask questions specific to your situation, and learn general information and strategies for understanding and communicating with your loved one.
If you yourself have BPD, consultation can be an opportunity to learn more about your diagnosis without the commitment of engaging in ongoing therapy.
Anyone who is interested in learning more about BPD can request a consult here. There is no age limit and no time commitment.
In a consultation session, you can bring specific questions or situations you'd like to understand better. Catherine will then provide education, skills, and resources relevant to your personal needs.
Sessions are usually 50 minutes long, but that time can be extended by mutual agreement or you can meet multiple times until you feel you have the information you need.
You may or may not wish to have a follow-up consult after you have had the chance to implement the new information you've learned.
Therapy is an ongoing relationship between a licensed professional and a client. The therapist will diagnose the client, collaborate with them on a treatment plan and goals, and work with them on a regular basis to alleviate symptoms.
In consultation, there is no diagnosis. In fact, the person with BPD may not be involved at all! The meetings are focused on education, rather than symptom reduction. There is no commitment to an ongoing relationship, although you may choose to have multiple consultation sessions.
